CHILD CARE CENTER PEDDLING MARIJUANA ENDANGERMENT CHARGES FILED

New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan, announced today the indictment of Donald Crespo and Akwasiba Radellant for Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Possession of Marijuana in the Second Degree and Unlawfully Dealing with a Child in the First Degree.

Defendant Radellant ran a child care facility from her apartment at Drew Hamilton Houses, a New York Housing Authority complex at 2660 Eighth Avenue, Number 2B in Manhattan. A three-month old female infant, left in Radellant’s care, was at the apartment when police arrived last Friday, March 7, 2008 to execute a search warrant. Both defendants were arrested at the time. The infant was taken to the 25th Precinct on 119th Street and Park Avenue where her parents later picked her up.

Radellant, the tenant of record, had child care certificates displayed on the wall of the apartment. She appeared to be licensed to operate a certified child care facility in an apartment where windows were covered with black plastic bags, fire alarms were deactivated, and dirty pacifiers lay on the floor.

More than three pounds of marijuana were seized from inside the kitchen cupboard. Also recovered were a digital scale, and plastic bags used for packaging marijuana. Crespo had $1,245.00 in his possession and a key to the apartment at the time of his arrest.

Crespo remains in jail on bail of $15,000, while defendant Radellant posted bail in the same amount.
